about

The Musical

Inspired by Joy’s real life experiences, SUPPORTIVE WHITE PARENTS is a comedy musical about an Asian girl who wishes on a shooting star for supportive white parents and eventually learns to love her Filipino parents for who they are. It’s sort of like an Asian American Book of Mormon (poignant satirical comedy) meets It’s a Wonderful Life (wish fulfillment).

The show started as a half hour musical that we put up at UCB, Second City Hollywood, and the Hollywood Fringe Festival, where it won the The Encore! Producers’ Award and the Best of the Broadwater Award. From there, it got a mostly sold out run as an hour-long premium show at Second City Hollywood, but was sadly cut short by the pandemic. We then spent the next few months baking pandemic bread and developing the script into a feature.

We’re now in the process of workshopping the full length stage musical and are about to record our concept album. We’ve put a lot of love into this musical and really think it could go far. Asians have a lot of money and want to laugh! Also we don’t have enough Asian American comedy musicals! Thank you for any support you can give, even if it’s just a follow or a shout out on social media, and know that we love you for who you are!

Music

Sam Johnides and Tony Gonzalez

are the collaborative songwriting duo behind the music for Supportive White Parents. They began composing together in 2010 as "The Sam & Tony Show" for several sketch shows and one-act musicals, including Missed Connections: A Craigslist Musical, Scifiology: The Musical, and Trump In Space: A Musical Comedy, performed at UCB, Second City Hollywood, and other comedy venues. Their most recent collaboration, Bachelor the Musical, ran in January 2022 at The Apollo Theater in Chicago, produced by Right Angle Entertainment. Their original musicals include Annabella, a musical fantasy drama performed at Hollywood Fringe 2015 and The Big Oak Theatre in 2016, and Happily Ever Under, a modern musical retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, workshopped through Apples and Oranges Theatre Accelerator in 2018. They also release songs, write original shows, and perform live concerts under the name "Diary of Atticus." Sam and Tony had the good fortune to meet Joy Regullano through Second City Hollywood, and are overjoyed to have been a part of bringing Supportive White Parents from its humble half-hour beginnings to the full length musical it is today, which speaks to audiences of all ages and cultural experiences.
